Robert Lewandowski has set another record in the competition.
Tucking away penalties is an art form, even though scoring from 12 yards out with a dead ball seems like one of the simplest things to achieve in football. But what if the stakes are as big as a Champions League night?
Being able to consistently threaten from the penalty spot is a skill in itself that demands a great deal of mental toughness in addition to evident technical ability to keep goalkeepers guessing. Of course, anyone can get lucky and shoot a penalty top bin if given the chance to take one sometimes.
We’ve examined the three players who have the most Champions League penalties.
3. Lionel Messi: 18
Lionel Messi’s majority of the spot kicks in the competition have come in a Barcelona jersey, while some of them have been scored in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt. Penalties turned out to be Messi’s only weakness and the only evidence that he was, in fact, a human. Although he has taken and scored an incredible number of penalty kicks, he has also been known to miss them.
However, the current Inter Miami star never really excelled in taking the spot kicks, as he has missed many crucial penalties in his playing career in the competition. Given his longevity in the game, Messi managed to rack up as many goals from the 12-yard line as possible.
2. Robert Lewandowksi: 19
After netting twice in Barcelona’s 5-4 victory over Benfica, Robert Lewandowski equalled Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the all-time Champions League list of penalty scorers.
Barcelona defeated Benfica 5–4 in a thrilling nine-goal Champions League match. Lewandowski equalled the previous mark set by Ronaldo, who scored 19 goals over his tenures at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, and surpassed Barca legend Lionel Messi’s tally of 18 successful penalty kicks in the competition. The Polish international scored both goals from the spot kick as he inspired the Catalan club to an impressive win.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo: 19
In addition to being a worldwide sensation, Cristiano Ronaldo has earned his place among the best football players in history. Ronaldo is among the most prolific penalty-takers in the long tradition of the game, and that much is evident.
Ronaldo is the most composed football player during crucial games because he always steps up when it comes to taking penalties and because of the number of spot kicks he has scored in crunch situations. Ronaldo has scored 19 penalties in the Champions League thus far in his playing career. However, Lewandowski might soon surpass him.
