Erling Haaland recently penned down a lengthy deal with Manchester City.

In the past, a club would often offer a player a five-year contract, and even those terms were typically saved for up-and-coming talents. These days, teams are eager to spread out the expense of their players’ salaries across several years in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations (PSR) and Financial Fair Play (FFP).

As a result, some teams are already offering big, long contracts to players they are interested in signing. This has been used far more by certain clubs.

There are, of course, other factors as well. In certain situations, clubs may have so much faith in a player that they wish to secure his long-term future with them (as was the case with Haaland). Erling Haaland is the most recent player to sign a long-term contract.

The longest deal in football has been awarded to him as a bonus. The Norwegian will remain at Man City until the summer of 2034 after agreeing to a new nine-and-a-half-year contract. According to reports, he will become one of the best-paid players in Premier League history when his previous release clause is lifted and replaced with a significantly larger one.

Haaland said about his new agreement. “I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club. Manchester City is a special Club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters. I am City no matter what.”
