João Neves enjoyed a breakout campaign at Benfica last season.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are finally closing in on the mega signing of João Neves from Portuguese side SL Benfica, with the agreement between the two cubs regarding the total transfer package at the advanced stages of negotiations.

With key hours ahead for PSG in order to formally seal the deal, final crucial details are being ironed out between the two clubs for a reported transfer fee of around €70 million plus a player. Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches is set to make the permanent switch from PSG to Benfica as a part of the deal. Neves has already given his green light for the move, as he is completely convinced by the PSG project.

In the 2023-24 season, João Neves enjoyed a breakout campaign at Benfica, making a staggering 55 appearances across all competitions while also registering three goals and two assists in the process. Owing to his stellar performances, the 19-year-old defensive midfielder was called up by Roberto Martinez as part of Portugal’s final squad for Euro 2024. Throughout the summer, Neves was linked with a top club move, with teams such as Manchester United seriously interested in signing the player.

On the other hand, Renato Sanches has failed to cement himself as a regular starter for PSG ever since joining the club from LOSC Lille in 2022. Last season, the 26-year-old midfielder was loaned out to Italian side AS Roma, where he managed to make just 12 appearances across all competitions, owing to his serious injury problems. Sanches is now finally set to make a return to Benfica this summer, a club where he grew to prominence as a player and was touted as one of the best upcoming midfielders in world football.

Paris Saint-Germain are in the middle of a club rebuild this summer following the free transfer of their superstar player Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid on the expiration of his contract.

Earlier in the window, Benfica were holding out for the release clause fee of €120 million for João Neves. However, with PSG offering a substantial fee up front, good payment terms, and Renato Sanches as part of the agreement, all the concerned parties are expected to finalise the deal this week.

In addition, PSG were also in concrete talks with Napoli for the signing of their star striker Victor Osimhen this summer. However, the negotiations at the moment are at a standstill with both clubs wide of the mark regarding their respective valuations of the player.
