Qualification scenarios if Spain win, draw or lose vs Uruguay in FIFA World Cup 2026

Uruguay and Spain will clash on June 26 IST.

With just one game in Group H, a matchup with Spain remaining, Uruguay are still in control of qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have collected two points from their opening two matches after drawing against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.

The South American side are third in Group H, behind Cape Verde on goal difference. Spain had a clear advantage with four points, followed by Saudi Arabia with just one point ahead of the last round of games.

With Spain taking on Uruguay and Cape Verde facing Saudi Arabia simultaneously, every result could have a major impact on the final standings. Uruguay’s qualification chances depend not only on their own result but, in some scenarios, also on the outcome of the other Group H match.

What happens if Uruguay and Spain tie?

A draw would take Spain to five points and Uruguay to three. Spain would qualify automatically for the Round of 32 and could still finish top of the group depending on the result between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Uruguay would qualify if Cape Verde either draw or lose to Saudi Arabia. If Cape Verde win, they would move to five points, and Uruguay would drop to third place with three points.

Even in that situation, Uruguay could remain in contention for one of the best third-placed qualification spots, subject to results in other groups and FIFA’s tiebreaker criteria.

A Spain victory would take them to seven points and guarantee first place in Group H regardless of the other result.

Uruguay would remain on two points and would be eliminated if Cape Verde either draw or beat Saudi Arabia.

The only route left for Uruguay in the event of defeat is if Saudi Arabia beat Cape Verde. Even then, Uruguay would finish third with two points and would need to rank among the best third-placed teams across the tournament to reach the Round of 32.

A Uruguay victory would move Marcelo Bielsa’s side to five points and guarantee qualification for the Round of 32.

Spain, meanwhile, would remain on four points. La Roja would still qualify if Cape Verde fail to beat Saudi Arabia. However, if Cape Verde win, Spain would finish second on four points and still progress automatically.

Depending on the margin of victory and the result in the other fixture, Uruguay could also finish as Group H winners.
