The forward suffered during Leipzig’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.
Xavi Simons’ season could be over as the forward has sustained an ankle ligament injury that will keep him out of action for several weeks, which is a massive blow for RB Leipzig.
The on-loan player from Paris Saint-Germain picked up the injury in RB Leipzig’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool in a Champions League match. He hobbled off in the 78th minute with Yussuf Poulsen replacing him.
The club released a statement on Thursday, which read: “Xavi unfortunately suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle in yesterday’s Champions League game against Liverpool and will be out for several weeks. The treatment method is still to be decided.”
This will be a big setback for the German club given he has been instrumental for the team this season. He has been their third productive player with three goals and two assists in all competitions after returning on loan for another year from Paris Saint-Germain.
RB Leipzig are set to be without the forward for many matches and it will be problematic given how he has fared impressively this season. Leipzig are second in the Bundesliga table and are tied in points with first place Bayern Munich.
They will next play Freiburg in the league match. A win will see them claim the top spot for some time before Bayern play on Sunday.
However, the Bundesliga club are yet to decide on whether the player needs surgery. If he does undergo surgery then the forward will miss the rest of the term similar to his teammate David Raum.
The club also have Xaver Schlager and Assan Ouedraogo sidelined with injuries. This could affect their title charge this season.
As of now, it remains to be seen the extent of Simons’ injury. The final decision will be made on the player’s surgery. Until then the club will have to play some other player in his position and will hope that he will be able to make as much impact as Simons.
