The full-back suffered several setbacks in his recovery from a knee injury.

During Tyrell Malacia’s protracted injury layoff from Manchester United, strange conspiracy ideas surfaced online, to which the Dutch left-back has answered.

The left-back had to undergo plenty of setbacks from his knee injury which impacted his life and his family during the recovery process.

Since the last Premier League match of the 2022–2023 season in May of last year, the 25-year-old left-back for Manchester United has not played for the Red Devils.

Despite having a persistent knee issue, he made a comeback to the field earlier this week during a Bristol Street Motors Trophy match between the U21s and Huddersfield.

During his 17-month hiatus, Dutchman Malacia didn’t post much on social media, which left admirers wondering where he was.

During the off-season, the full-back continued to have pain in his knee that saw him undergo surgery which left Inflammation around the affected knee

However, despite the treatment on his knee, it didn’t improve his fitness as the player had the presence of small fragments of cartilage around the meniscus. Malacia had two choices either leave the fragments and hope they disappear naturally, or reopen the knee and undergo further surgery.

But the player opted to undergo another surgery and is now regaining health and strength and will hope to be back in action under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

However, conspiracy theorists on social media came up with wild notions, such as the idea that he had gone under witness protection.

However, Malacia has since revoked all of those recommendations. He stated in an interview with The Athletic: “No, nothing was real. No, no. I have been undergoing rehabilitation

“Especially when I was in Holland, I was close to my family — so just training, family, sleeping; training, family, sleeping. The only thing I’ve done.”

“Nothing was true,” he said. “I’ve just been doing my rehab. As long as my family know I’m good, it’s enough.” And ultimately, he was.

He continued: “First of all, I’m not really a guy who’s on social media a lot. If it wasn’t my cousin or my mum sending me this, I wouldn’t even know. Most of the time, a week after I’d find out they were saying this or that.

“As long as my family and I know I’m good, it’s enough. The most important thing is that I know I’m good.”

“He wasn’t able to walk anymore,” Malacia continued. “For my family, it was a big, big impact. It’s still difficult sometimes.”

Malacia’s grandmother, whom he refers to as “my second mum,” died and his father became ill while he was on the sidelines. He maintained a low profile and was very secretive during this hard time.

Malacia’s impending return gives new boss Ruben Amorim a head start as he prepares for his first away game as manager on November 24 against Ipswich. Despite playing 39 games in his debut season, he was completely absent from the 2023–2024 season.

The stages during Tyrell Malacia’s unavailability, according to his interview with The Athletic FC:

  • Left meniscus tear.
  • Persistent pain despite rest during the off-season.
  • Surgery.
  • Inflammation around the affected knee.
  • Treatment does not improve the situation.
  • Scans reveal the presence of small fragments of cartilage around the meniscus.
  • Two options: leave the fragments and hope they disappear naturally, or reopen the knee and undergo further surgery.
  • New surgery.
  • Convalescence.
