Ronald Koeman's Netherlands announce squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League games
Oranje will face Germany and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
After overcoming a long-term injury, Jurrien Timber has rejoined the Netherlands team. Coach Ronald Koeman announced the 23-man roster for the UEFA Nations League matches in September.
The defender for Arsenal, Timber, had sustained a significant knee injury at the beginning of the previous campaign. He was cleared to play in April but was left out of the national team for the European Championship in the middle of the campaign.
He is one of four players who have been added to the team for the September 7 Nations League Group A3 encounter against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Eindhoven and the September 10 Nations League Group A3 match against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
With 15 caps, Timber last appeared for the Netherlands in a 4-0 defeat to France in Paris in March 2023. Quinten, his identical twin brother and Feyenoord player, was called up again after making his debut against Germany in March of last year. He also suffered a thigh injury that kept him out of Euro 2024.
Jorrel Hato, an 18-year-old defender for Ajax Amsterdam, is back as well. He was capped in November of last year but was not chosen again.
As an alternate goalie, Nick Olij replaces Justin Bijlow, whose transfer from Feyenoord to Southampton was cancelled this week due to a medical test setback. Steven Bergwijn, Memphis Depay, Stefan de Vrij and Georginio Wijnaldum are also not included in the Euros team. Frenkie de Jong has withdrawn from international football due to injury.
Bergwijn’s omission will be sour for the player. The main reason for his exclusion has been mainly due to the forward’s move to a Saudi club. It was slammed by the former Barcelona manager. He felt the player had joined the Saudi club not for sporting reasons.
