United will return to action tonight against Southampton.

Mason Mount and Luke Shaw of Manchester United are getting closer to making their injury comebacks, which will give Ruben Amorim’s team more strength in the squad.

Shaw has mostly watched from the sidelines this season as Manchester United have had a wild ride, including Erik ten Hag’s exit and Amorim’s appointment. After playing as a substitute left centre-back in the Portuguese coach’s first two games as United’s manager, the England international has been sidelined due to injury.

Ten Hag benched Mount after he missed the campaign’s opening game, but Amorim welcomed the midfielder back into the action before he suffered a thigh injury. Mount has had just an intermittent appearance at Manchester United this season. A status report on Shaw and Mount’s injury recovery has now been given by the former Sporting manager.

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: “Luke Shaw is nearer than Mason Mount. Mason Mount will take a little bit longer. Luke, we’ll see in the next week or two. We’ll see if he’s returning.”

When the Red Devils play Southampton later on Thursday and Brighton on Sunday, January 19, Amorim will be leading his team into their next two games without Shaw and Mount.

After the midfielder was replaced just 14 minutes into last month’s derby victory against Manchester City due to a new muscle injury, Amorim also brushed aside any notion that Mount may miss the remainder of the season.

Since then, the 25-year-old has seen a specialist regarding his most recent issue.

Shaw and Mount will not be the only definite Man Utd absentees against Southampton. Diogo Dalot has been banned following his red card in the FA Cup third-round penalty shootout victory over Arsenal, and Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are still out.

However, Harry Maguire’s involvement is dubious, and while rumours about Marcus Rashford’s future continue, it is unclear if he will be involved.

“Harry was sick in the last game,” Amorim added. “He was dead in the end – and that’s what I want from every player. [Playing against the Saints?] Harry, we will see. We cannot lose him, so we will see. Martinez, I think, is okay. Diogo cannot play – his fault!”
