The left-back picked up the injury against Switzerland on Thursday

Euro 2024 Group A side Scotland have a huge problem in hand after their first choice left back Kieran Tierney faced a campaign ending injury during their group stage clash against Switzerland on Thursday.

Kieran Tierney sustained a hamstring injury and has now been ruled out for the remainder of the European championship. He has also left the Scottish camp in Germany to return to London after being stretched off late in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

Scotland without Kieran Tierney

Tierney’s injury is the latest addition to Scotland’s long list of problems at the European Championship. Scotland are already missing out on the services of full-backs Nathan Paterson and Aaron Hickey. Moreover, defender Ryan Porteous will also miss the game against Hungary, thanks to his red card against Germany.

The left-back has been a crucial player for his nation under the tutelage of Steve Clarke.  Scotland has a win percentage of 46% with Tierney in the side and without him, the winning percentage drops to 41%. He is an impact player for Scotland and his numbers speak volume about his importance in the team.

Scotland’s performance so far

Scotland have not had a tournament to remember too far. It has been a disappointing start for them and the problems seem never ending. They were humbled by hosts Germany in a 5-1 defeat in Munich in their curtain raiser.

They hoped to script a comeback story in their second game against the Swiss and did very well to begin with. They scored the opening goal early in the game after Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay found the back of the net, but they failed to maintain their lead before Switzerland restored parity in Xherdan Shaqiri.

It was an evenly poised game with both teams creating their fair share of chances, but failing to convert those. Next up, Scotland will be up against Hungary in their final group game with everything at stake. It’s a do-or-die game for them and any slip ups at this stage will mark the end of their journey in the continental championship.
