Both nations meet again in a Euro 2024 group-stage clash

When Scotland and Switzerland take the field in Cologne on Wednesday, the two sides will be in vastly different mindsets following their opening results at Euro 2024.

For the Scots, their tournament began in nightmarish fashion with a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of hosts Germany.

Steve Clarke’s men were simply overmatched against the prolific German attack led by young stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. Scotland played a man down for the entire second half after Ryan Porteous’ red card, but the damage was already done by that point.

Now bottom of Group A, Scotland realistically needs a win over the Swiss to keep any hopes of advancement to the knockout rounds alive. Otherwise, an early exit looms for a nation still seeking its first European Championship finals victory since the turn of the millennium.

In stark contrast, Switzerland opened their Euro 2024 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Hungary. First-time scorers Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer staked the Swiss to a 2-0 lead before Barnabas Varga briefly made it 2-1. But Breel Embolo’s late goal sealed all three points for Murat Yakin’s side.

Switzerland now sits second in Group A and can secure a spot in the Round of 16 with a win over Scotland before facing Germany in their group finale.

While Switzerland and Scotland have not met since a 3-1 friendly win for the Swiss back in 2006, this matchup will have major implications for each nation’s Euro 2024 journey.

For the Scots, it’s a matter of restoring some pride after their humbling defeat to Germany. Avoiding a second straight lopsided loss is pivotal if they are to have any chance, however remote, of reaching the knockouts.

The Swiss, meanwhile, can effectively end Scotland’s hopes with a victory and take a major step towards advancement with three more points in the bag.

Switzerland has been the superior side in recent years. With a spot in the Round of 16 within reach, Yakin’s men will be highly motivated to dispose of the struggling Scots.
