Ronaldo vs Messi has been a decade-long GOAT debate.

“Messi or Ronaldo” is one of the most persistent football controversies, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has offered his opinion. Although he acknowledged that his son is a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, the top executive rated Lionel Messi the greatest player of all time.

In a recent podcast, Pichai provided an open and personal analysis, even drawing a comparison between Messi’s brilliance and Cristiano Ronaldo’s meticulous perfection.

Pichai laughed and said Messi sits apart. He was asked explicitly to explain the “Messi or Ronaldo, or Pele, or Maradona” debate.

The internal dynamics of his own family were noted by Pichai, who said:

“It’s been interesting, ’cause my son is a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan, and so we’ve had to watch El Clásicos together, you know, with that dynamic in there.”

“I think CR7 is one of the greatest athletes of all time, and I’ve never seen an athlete more dedicated to that level of greatness. But Messi is it for me, you know,” Pichai continued.

He also talked about a time he went to see Messi play.

“Had the chance to see him a couple weeks ago, he played in San Jose, so against the Quakes, so I went to see it, see the game. Was a fan, had good seats, knew where he would play in the second half, hopefully. And even at his age, just watching him when he gets the ball, that movement, you know, you’re right, that special quality, it’s tough to describe, but you feel it when you see it.”

Pichai compared running Google to coaching Real Madrid or Barcelona in the same podcast. When questioned about the difficult time, Pichai cited his capacity to “tune out noise,” likening it to leading a professional sports team.

“Running Google, you may as well be coaching Barcelona or Real Madrid,” Pichai stated, acknowledging that “you have a bad season.”
