With matchday 1 of Group A over, the Swiss side holds second spot.

At the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Germany, Switzerland defeated Hungary by 3-1 in their Group A match to start their Euro 2024 campaign.

During the first half, Switzerland took the lead thanks to goals from Michel Aebischer and Kwadwo Duah. Barnabas Varga handed Hungary a sympathy goal in the second half. After notching a goal in stoppage time, Breel Embolo closed up the match for the Swiss on a positive note.

Switzerland prevails despite being forced to sweat after coasting to a 2-0 halftime lead. On three points, they tie themselves with host nation Germany in Group A.

In just his second game, Duah scored his first goal for Switzerland and shortly before the break, Aebischer opened his own international account with an incredible curler to put his team comfortably in control.

After the break, Hungary—who had qualified with spectacular style under Italian coach Marco Rossi—became a completely different team. In the 66th minute, Barnabas Varga dipped to head in a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai.

After a season marred by injuries, Embolo came off the bench to help Switzerland withstand late Hungarian pressure. He took advantage of a defensive blunder in stoppage time to secure the victory by 3-1 scoreline.

The frail Swiss would have liked to prevent Hungary from an opener because they sorely needed an injection of trust. Hungary have been exuding panache following an astounding unbeaten run that spanned 20 months until last week.

After a miserable, at times awkward Euro qualifying campaign, Switzerland finished second in the simplest of the groups. It had only defeated Andorra in its last eight games and had let leads slip in four of those games—against Romania, twice against Kosovo and once against Israel.

However, they have looked a different side in their opening game of Euro 2024 and will hope to continue in the same vein.
