The Portuguese midfielder could leave the club in the summer window.
After a terrible 2024–25 season, Teddy Sheringham, a legend of Manchester United, declared that Bruno Fernandes is “not captain material.”
The 2024–25 Premier League season will see United finish in their lowest standing since the 1973–74 season. After a devastating 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final, they also lost their chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
However, individually, Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a great season. In all competitions, the midfielder has recorded 15 goals and 13 assists in 49 matches. But despite his terrific performance, the player has drawn criticism from the former United player.
Fernandes has received a lot of flak for leading the club. The entire squad, including the manager Ruben Amorim, has been blasted for the awful performances.
Speaking to Prime Casino, Sheringham said: “I think in terms of whether or not Bruno Fernandes is captain material for Manchester United, then I agree with [Keane] a bit on that front. It’s similar to Martin Odegaard at Arsenal. ”
”I think that they’re both fantastic players for their clubs, and I love them, I love the way they play. But they’re not real captain material, they’re missing leadership qualities. They’re closer to flair players that can come and go over the course of a season. Two top players, but not captains in the Keano or Adams mould for me.”
Fernandes’ statement that he would remain with United until they told him “it’s time to go” after the team’s defeat in the Europa League final stoked rumours about his future.
The midfielder has been starved of any big trophies since joining the club. He has only been able to lift the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Al-Hilal may intensify their efforts to sign the top player before the commencement of the FIFA Club World Cup next month, according to a later report from Sky Sports.
