Thomas Muller announces retirement from international football

Thomas Muller appeared in 131 matches for the German football team.
The 34-year-old attacker Thomas Muller announced his retirement from international competition today after the European Championship came to an end, with Spain defeating England in Berlin on Sunday night to win the title. Muller ends a remarkable 14-year career with Germany, in which he played in a total of 131 games and contributed 86 goals.
Muller was named in the German squad for the 2024 European Championship on home soil. Although, he only made two appearances totaling 56 minutes of play, he did provide an assist against Scotland on the opening night.
His last appearance for his country was as a substitute in the quarter-final loss to Spain, where the hosts were eliminated in extra-time.
Muller, who scored five goals to help Germany win the 2014 World Cup, won the Golden Boot in the competition which took place in South Africa, four years prior.
Muller has a year left on his Bayern Munich contract, despite having retired from international play. Germany will find it difficult to replace someone with his kind of influence, but they will be hoping that up-and-coming players like Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala can step up.
Muller added in a farewell video on YouTube, “It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together.
“When I had the privilege of making my first international appearance over 14 years ago, I would never have dreamed of all this.
“I would like to say thank you to all the fans and my Germany teammates for their support over the years. Take the enthusiasm and joy of this year’s Euros with you.”
