Thomas Tuchel says Marcus Rashford has enough 'potential' to become global star

Tuchel feels Rashford can score more goals.

Marcus Rashford, an attacking player for Barcelona on loan from Manchester United, has been cautioned by Thomas Tuchel not to waste his talent. Rashford came off the bench for England against Latvia last night.

The Three Lions’ 5-0 victory at Daugava Stadium in Riga secured their berth for the World Cup the following summer.

Following a loan stint at Aston Villa last season and a subsequent loan to Barcelona this season, Rashford has returned to the England fold since Tuchel was appointed manager.

In 10 games thus far in his time in Spain, he has three goals and five assists. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel has pushed the forward to maintain his current level of play.

Marcus Rashford is not too old to “be one of the best in the world,” according to the England head coach, but at the moment, “the numbers don’t reach the potential.”

Before Monday’s encounter against Latvia, the England head coach remarked on Rashford:

“I think the limit for him is very high. Maybe higher than for others. He has the potential, but potential is a dangerous word with high-level sports.

“You have to reach your personal best on a regular basis, that is what is demanded on this kind of level and that is the challenge for him.

“It’s not a question of talent, it’s a question of whether he can prove the point at club and international level.

“He can be one of the best in the world because of the quality I see in training, the finishing with both legs and with the head.

“He is explosive, he is fast, he is strong in the air, so where are the limits? There are no limits – but the numbers don’t reach the potential, it is as easy as that.

“He is still young enough (27 years old) to take the right decisions and not let go. Because otherwise he will be disappointed in 10 years at what could have been and what he made of it.”

Despite being inconsistent throughout his playing career, Rashford remains one of the big names in the sport and clubs never want to miss a chance to sign him. The forward is an excellent attacking threat and is a big difference maker. But his inconsistency makes him unreliable.

This is the big reason why Tuchel feels that Rashford isn’t living up to his potential. However, his recent form for Barcelona has demonstrated that he could enjoy one of the best seasons under Flick.
