Toni Kroos named Germany's Footballer of the Year 2024; beats Florian Wirtz & Granit Xhaka

The midfielder announced his retirement in the recent season.
According to Kicker, Toni Kroos was chosen Player of the Year by the German Sports Journalists’ Association (VDS) following his last season as a professional football player.
With 285 votes, Kroos emerged as the winner. The winner could have been chosen between all German players and players who were based in Germany.
Kroos had captured his sixth UEFA Champions League championship with Real Madrid before going to the Euros. At the beginning of the season, Julian Nagelsmann persuaded the 2014 World Cup winner to rejoin the national team, giving the DFB team security and confidence as they prepared for the Euro 2024. In 2018, Kroos was previously chosen as the Footballer of the Year.
Kroos’s legacy will be remembered forever at the international and club levels. He elevated his performance to the next level which saw fans finally start noticing the player’s talent.
His retirement might have come a bit strange but he managed to hang up his boots winning every possible trophy in his career.
However, the silverware that eluded the midfielder was the European Championship. Toni Kroos certainly would have been more content had he won the Euros this summer. But the host nation Germany were eliminated by Spain.
In the last Euro as well, they lost to England in the last 16. These events dented the player’s hope to win the only trophy that was missing in his career. However, the playmaker won the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany, where he emerged as one of the most talented midfielders.
His performance saw him earn a move to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich. There he further cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders in Europe, going on to win six Champions League titles.
But during the 2023-24 season, when he confirmed he would quit football, it came as a surprise. He still had a few years left to play at the top level and could have continued for at least another year at Madrid.
But maybe he felt it was the right decision. His age right now might have forced the player to call the quits finally. However, he retires with another prestigious award: German Football Player of the Year.
