Merih Demiral's historic brace sends Turkey to Euro 2024 quarterfinals with 2-1 victory over Austria

Turkey will face Netherlands in last eight.

In a match that was worthy of a championship final, Turkey defeated Austria 2-1 thanks to an improbable brace from defender Merih Demiral.

Turkey’s advantage was increased just before the hour mark by Al-Ahli center-back Demiral, who scored the fastest goal in European Championship history to startle Austria.

Arda Guler’s corner kicks were the source of both of their goals, with centre-back Merih Demiral finishing it off. The first attempt was made in just 57 seconds, and well before the hour mark, Demiral increased Turkey’s advantage.

Late in the game, Austria surged forward and equalised when substitute Michael Gregoritsch finished the shot at the far post. In the last minute, they then had a chance to tie the score, but goalie Mert Gunok managed to block Christoph Baumgartner’s header at close range.

For the remainder of the half, Austria kept Turkey at bay but Michael Gregoritsch knocked in an open ball at the back to keep Austria in the game again.

Austria had the chance to equalise the game but Turkey’s goalkeeper pulled off the save of the tournament to deny Austria and keep Turkey’s hopes alive to reaching the semi-final.

Turkey will now play the Netherlands, a team that Austria famously defeated 3-2 in the tournament’s group stage. Whoever wins will advance to the European Championship semi-finals.

Turkey have not advanced to the last eight of the tournament since 2008. They are seen as underdogs in the competition. However, with Austria defeating the Netherlands in the group stage it appeared that Ralf Ranganick’s side would be one of the contenders to go to next round but Turkey were far more clinical with their chances.
