FIFA grants Unity Cup 2026 Full Tier 1 International Tournament status

Unity Cup 2026 will feature India, Nigeria, Zimbabwe & Jamaica
FIFA has granted the Unity Cup 2026 Tier 1 tournament status ahead of the competition, which is scheduled to kick off next week.
This comes as a major development, as fixtures in the Unity Cup 2026 will now count as full international matches under FIFA regulations. This means the tournament is no longer just a mere friendly competition, but one that will directly impact a team’s overall FIFA ranking.
The premier international football tournament celebrating AfroCentric and global diaspora communities will now carry added competitive significance with its newly acquired FIFA Tier 1 status. The 2026 edition of the Unity Cup, set to return to its historic home, will feature Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) issued a statement confirming that the Unity Cup 2026 has been given a FIFA Tier 1 recognition.
The statement began with, “The Unity Cup has officially been announced as a FIFA Tier 1 event, marking a major milestone for the tournament and reinforcing its growing international profile ahead of next week’s competition at The Valley in south-east London.”
“This year’s Unity Cup will feature four international teams: Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe, competing across two semi-finals and a finals day between 26-30 May at Charlton Athletic’s historic home ground. The opening semi-final will see Nigeria face Zimbabwe on Tuesday 26 May, followed by Jamaica against India on Wednesday 27 May, with the third-place play-off and final taking place on Saturday 30 May.”
“Tournament organisers welcomed the FIFA Tier 1 designation as a significant step forward for the competition, ensuring participating fixtures carry full international recognition under FIFA regulations while continuing the Unity Cup’s legacy of celebrating football, culture and diaspora communities in London”, the statement concluded with.
What does this mean?

This now means that now the Unity Cup 2026 has been granted full official international recognition by FIFA, so the matches in the Unity Cup 2026 will now be treated as official international match under FIFA regulations.
So, overall, this implies that the matches in Unity Cup 2026 can contribute to the FIFA World Rankings and the refereeing and match reporting will follow FIFA standards.
However there is a slight catch to it, despite the tournament now being a FIFA Tier 1 tournament, apperances in the Unity Cup will not be counted as official international caps because the tournament falls outside the window recognised by FIFA which starts from June 1.
Therefore, clubs are not bound to release players for the national team camp, which naturally explains why Mohun Bagan SG called back their players from the India camp.
