USMNT squad for November international break; Christian Pulisic included by Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will face Jamaica twice in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals.
Tim Weah, a winger, was selected on Sunday to play for the United States (USMNT) against Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals. However, he will have to miss coach Mauricio Pochettino’s first competitive game. He will serve out his suspension for receiving a red card during the defeat to Panama in Copa America in June.
On June 27, Weah punched opposition defender Roderick Miller on the back of the head, earning him a two-game suspension. Due to the team’s elimination in the first round itself, as a result of the 2-1 loss, Gregg Berhalter was replaced by Pochettino by the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Due to an ankle ailment, Weah missed last month’s friendlies against Panama and Mexico. He scored in Juventus’ victory over Torino on Saturday.
The three-time reigning champion U.S. welcomes the Reggae Boyz in St. Louis on November 18 after playing at Kingston, Jamaica, Thursday night in the first game of the total-goals series over two legs.
Despite being absent from last month’s actions, goalie Diego Kochen, defender Chris Richards, midfielder Johnny Cardoso, and forward Cade Cowell were all named to the 25-man squad. Defenders Kristoffer Lund and Marlon Fossey were benched, as was goalie Ethan Horvath.
Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic, who compete for Juventus and AC Milan in Italy, respectively, were not present in last month’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Mexico. Pochettino’s first formal competitive matches since taking over as USMNT coach in September will include the two games versus Jamaica as the main attractions.
Tyler Adams, a midfielder who has battled injuries, was one of the USMNT team’s noticeable absences, although Pochettino stated that the 25-year-old was crucial to the team’s future.
