Neymar was named in the provisional squad of Selecao ahead of the World Cup qualifier games.

Vinícius Jr has expressed his excitement over Neymar possibly rejoining the Brazil squad for their next World Cup qualifying matches against Argentina and Colombia. Neymar is expected to be selected in Brazil’s final squad when they announce it on Thursday.

The 33-year-old hasn’t played for Brazil since suffering a major knee injury that put him out of action for a year during the team’s World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay in October 2023.

“The expectation is great because he is the idol of our generation,” Vinícius said for Neymar to TNT Brasil.

“We are very happy that he returned to Santos,” Vinícius said. “That he has returned to score and that he is happy, which is always the most important thing.”

After injuries hampered him to just seven games in more than 18 months with Saudi side Al Hilal, he returned to his boyhood club, Santos, in the January transfer window in an attempt to regain his form. Neymar now seems to be finding his rhythm back at the Brazilian club.

After netting his third goal in his past four matches for Santos in Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Bragantino, Neymar declared he is “getting back into my best physical shape.”

Neymar had to be treated on the bench after being substituted out of Sunday’s match in the 76th minute due to a thigh issue. This raised concern about the latest injury the forward might have suffered, but he later assured supporters that he was all alright.

After 12 games, Brazil are seven points behind leaders Argentina in their World Cup qualification group, in fifth place. In their qualification games, Dorival Júnior’s team has won five and lost four.

Brazil’s next two matches are against Colombia in Brasilia on March 20 and a South American “classico” against the defending champions Argentina in Buenos Aires five days later.
