Los Blancos have started talks with the Brazilian over a contract extension.

It has been claimed that Vinicius Jr rejected Real Madrid’s initial contract offer. Negotiations are still going on as the Spanish powerhouses attempt to ward off the Saudi Arabian team’s interest.

With the Saudi Pro League vying for the Brazilian’s signing, there is still conjecture about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu. According to reports, he might be the target for Saudi clubs, who are ready to spend a whopping €300 million (£251.2 million) this summer on him.

Naturally, Madrid are eager to hold onto the 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up, who last season helped them win both the European and Spanish titles. This season, he has also been unrelenting, contributing more than 25 goals across all competitions.

In an effort to protect his future, according to The Athletic, Madrid started negotiating a new contract in the middle of January.

The purpose of the preliminary talks was to ascertain the scope of Vinicius’ demands. Madrid gave Roc Nation, the player’s representatives, a financial proposal that would have increased his pay, but that first offer was quickly turned down. It is believed that talks are still going on.

Los Blancos are unwilling to alter their compensation structure in order to reach an agreement, even if they are aware that they will need to present a sizable financial package to counter Saudi Arabia’s bids.

Even if Vinicius Jr is currently the third best-paid player at the club with a weekly salary of about €400,000, his pay is still insignificant when compared to Kylian Mbappe, who joined in the summer and now makes €600,000 every seven days when bonuses are included.

In addition to rewarding Vinicius for his outstanding on-field exploits, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to demonstrate that he will not be overshadowed by Mbappe’s wages in the Spanish city. The 24-year-old’s current contract, which was last extended in October 2023, keeps him with the team through June 2027.

Vinicius has previously stated that he wants to remain at Real Madrid, but this summer’s outrageous Saudi bids will put his determination to the test.
