I certainly want to remain that for the next two year: Virgil van Dijk on his Liverpool future
The Dutchman has one year left on his Reds deal.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk wants to commit his future to Liverpool for more years that will keep him ready for the next FIFA World Cup.
The former Southampton defender’s deal with the Reds is set to end after the culmination of the ongoing season. There are yet to be talks regarding the extension of the deal.
Earlier the Dutch player revealed that he would consider his Liverpool future when Jurgen Klopp decided to step down as the club’s coach. The player also attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League sides but he seems to be leaning towards extending his contract.
Van Dijk can also negotiate talks with the other clubs in January as the pressure grows on Michael Edwards and new sporting director Richard Hughes to keep the centre-back.
Not only Van Dijk but Liverpool can also lose Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold for free next summer. They will soon have to start talks with all these players to keep them at the club.
However, under Arne Slot, the Premier League side have started the new season in an excellent way. This seems to have convinced the player (Virgil van Dijk) to commit to the club for two more years. Staying at Anfield will surely help him stay in shape for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Van Dijk said: “At both teams I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader! And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years. I am human, I have emotions too. You start thinking all kinds of things. Especially just after a game like the elimination (by England) in the very last minute.
“I also understand that it came across unclear on how I stood in all this, because after the match I was so disappointed and full of emotion. It perhaps came across as if it had been my last international match. I did have doubts that night and I did hint at that.
Van Dijk’s contract extension at the club will give the team more time to find an ideal replacement for him. The Reds failed to make many signings this summer transfer window.
They will also have to sort out the future of Alexander Arnold and Salah. Otherwise, both could leave for free next summer. Many clubs are already keeping an eye on their situation.
