Carrick is set to take on the Red Devils’ caretaker manager role.

Wayne Rooney is ready to join Michael Carrick’s coaching staff at Manchester United. Rooney has said it would be a “no-brainer” to return to his former club as a coach.

After former manager Ruben Amorim was fired on January 5, Carrick, a former teammate of Rooney’s for both United and England, has been the front-runner to lead Old Trafford until the end of the current campaign.

After Amorim left, former Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher, who also played with Rooney at United, was given interim command of first-team affairs. He was in charge of both the 2-1 FA Cup loss to Brighton and the Premier League draw against Burnley.

When asked if he would think about working in Carrick’s coaching department, the 40-year-old responded as follows on The Wayne Rooney Show on the BBC:

“Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging a job here, by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to ‌go in of course I would. ‌Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”

Carrick’s record at Man United

The 44-year-old Carrick previously served as United’s temporary manager for three games after Solskjaer was fired in 2021.

After Ralf Rangnick took over as interim manager, he left after winning two and drawing one of those games. After that, he joined Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship and nearly helped them return to the Premier Legaue during his time there.

In the meantime, Wayne Rooney left Derby, DC United, Birmingham, and Plymouth by mutual consent in December 2024.
