Wayne Rooney snubs Lionel Messi when asked which player he wished to have played with

The ex-Manchester United icon named former Real Madrid star.
One of England’s greatest football players, Wayne Rooney, has named Zinedine Zidane as his ideal teammate. Unexpectedly, the 39-year-old former Manchester United and Everton star chose the French midfield maestro over Lionel Messi, who is regarded as one of the best players of all time.
During his career, Rooney played for a number of teams, including Derby County, Everton, Manchester United, and D.C. United. He won five Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, and numerous other valuable trophies during the course of his time at Manchester United.
He played with some of the biggest names in football during his tenure at United, such as Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, and Cristiano Ronaldo. His reputation as a football great was cemented by his accomplishments at the club level and his leadership of the England national team.
In an interview with “The Overlap” on Sky Bet, Rooney explained his choice, stating, “I wish I played with Zinedine Zidane, just how good he was. Messi is the best of all time, but to play with Zidane would be amazing. He’s cool, calm, plays with both feet, goals and assists.”
This preference demonstrates Wayne Rooney’s admiration for Zidane’s distinct skill set and general style of play, even though it is surprising considering Messi’s well-recognized greatness. Given Zidane’s sophisticated approach, tactical awareness, and capacity to control the game’s flow, Rooney’s respect for him is hardly unexpected.
Zidane’s career was full of achievements. He represented France 108 times and scored 31 goals while playing for elite teams like Real Madrid, Juventus, Cannes, and Bordeaux. The UEFA European Championship, the FIFA World Cup, LaLiga, and the Champions League are among the trophies in his trophy cabinet.
He made a smooth transition from playing to managing after retiring, winning three Champions League titles while managing Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi who left Barcelona joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and after playing two seasons there he left Europe and signed for MLS side Inter Miami.
