Wirtz was named Bundesliga Player of the season last term.

Florian Wirtz, a midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen, sustained an ankle injury while on duty for Germany in the UEFA Nations League, the Bundesliga team confirmed. The team did not specify when Wirtz would return.

During Monday’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League in Munich, Wirtz hurt his ankle and was unable to play again after halftime.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Leverkusen said an MRI confirmed Wirtz “suffered a capsule injury to his right ankle at the end of the first half,” adding it was “still unclear when he will return to training.”

According to the club, the 21-year-old “is currently undergoing treatment in Leverkusen.”

Following Monday’s game, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann stated, “Flo has a bit of a problem with a tendon… we hope it’s nothing bad.”

Last season, Florian Wirtz won the Bundesliga Player of the Year award as Leverkusen won both the league and the domestic cup as they went undefeated before facing Atalanta in the Europa League. He has scored six goals and provided one assist for Leverkusen so far this season.

It now depends on the severity of his injury as it will determine how long Wirtz will be sidelined. However, it is probably safe to assume that he will not be available for the Bundesliga matchup against high-flying Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend. Wirtz’s availability for the UCL match against Stade Brest on Wednesday is likewise questionable.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen have found it difficult to replicate their performance from the previous season in the first few games of this campaign. Die Werkself will suffer greatly from Wirtz’s absence. The current Bundesliga Player of the Season could be replaced by Jonas Hofmann, Amine Adli, and Martin Terrier, in the starting lineup for his club.

Wirtz’s impact on Bayer Leverkusen has been immense. The German club will hope that his injury is not severe and will return to action as quickly as possible.
