City could finish first or second in their round group stage game.
Following their victory over Al Ain, Manchester City advanced to the Club World Cup’s round of 16. Here is who could be their possible opponent for the first phase of the knockout rounds.
In Atlanta, City easily defeated their opponents, winning 6-0. Prior to Claudio Echeverri curling in a free kick, Ilkay Gundogan started the game with a clipped finish.
Before Gundogan scored again and additional goals in the second half from replacements Oscar Bobb and Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland’s penalty on the stroke of halftime put the score at three.
As a result, City advanced to the round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 with one game remaining. With six points from six games, Pep Guardiola’s team is tied for first place in the group with Juventus.
When the two teams play on Thursday at 8 p.m., first place will be determined, and City are aware that they need to win to surpass the Italians.
Which team will Manchester City face in the round of 16 of FIFA Club World Cup 2025?
Groups are determined by head-to-head records first, but as City and Juventus can only tie for points by drawing, goal differential and then goals scored are taken into consideration.
City will take on the second-place team from Group H if they top their group, and the champions of that group if they come second.
Real Madrid, who presently lead their group with four points after two games, might be the Blues’ opponent. After their 0-0 tie with Al Hilal, the Austrians are likewise on four points going into their last match against Los Blancos.
With two points, Al-Hilal still have a chance to qualify before facing the already-out and pointless Pachuca in the last group match. Meanwhile, Madrid will face RB Salzburg in their last group stage game.
This means City have the potential to face Madrid in the round of 16 if they finish first and the Spanish side come second in their group. However, they can still face Madrid if Manchester City finish second and Los Blancos finish second in their respective groups.
