Which two clubs were rejected by Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim before accepting Manchester United deal?
The Portuguese will start his Red Devils stint on 11 November.
Before agreeing to leave Sporting CP to become the new coach of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim rejected offers from two teams.
A Bola reports that despite West Ham and Al-Nassr’s offers to trigger the €10 million (£8m/$11m) release clause in his agreement with Sporting CP, Amorim wasn’t willing to leave the Portuguese team. Amorim stated that the United position was the only one he desired and that he was waiting for a more alluring project.
West Ham were the first team to get in touch with Sporting. Amorim went to London to talk about the club’s terms and ambitions, but he turned down their offer because it didn’t align with his own objectives. Al-Nassr came in second. They offered him €20 million (£17 million/$22 million) annually. Even that was also turned by the Portuguese coach.
Amorim will now manage a club who are currently disjointed despite reinforcing their squad during the summer window as Erik ten Hag failed to produce convincing results.
The Portuguese coach is coming to a league where fans demand instant results and the pressure is all-time high on a manager to demonstrate his managerial acumen in the matches.
However, Amorim will certainly be given time to illustrate if he is the ideal manager for the Red Devils, who have struggled to remain consistent with their wins every season.
Amorim has just two matches remaining at Sporting CP before taking over at Old Trafford on November 11, as the Portuguese manager’s next destination is now confirmed.
His final league match as manager will be against SC Braga in the second game, and the first will be a Champions League matchup against future rivals Manchester City.
After that, he will embark on a new chapter of his managerial career where he will be under the spotlight every time. His style of play will be assessed as well how the players will fit into his system will be interesting to see.
