This piece analyses the records that can be broken before the end of the calendar year.

We always look season by season when discussing Premier League records instead for the entire year. Given the structure of the football schedule and the inherent chaos of a July preseason, it makes sense.

Teams that have accumulated more points in a single year than any other team are frequently mentioned. No trophies will be given out for these records, as with other events, but players and teams that have maintained consistency from the beginning of January to the end of December should receive just as much praise that comes with achievements.

In order to determine whether someone can surpass these specific records by the end of 2024, let’s get started:

Most goal involvement

As for the 2024–25 season, the Chelsea sensation Cole Palmer has made sure that the Blues are very much in the running for the Premier League title, whether Enzo Maresca likes it or not. He does this by putting on incredible performances every week.

Palmer’s 38 Premier League goal contributions in 34 games in 2024, with 25 goals and 13 assists, are seven more than the next-highest total (Mohamed Salah, 31 in 28 games). But he still has work to do to surpass the all-time competition milestone for a calendar year.

For years, no one has been able to surpass the seemingly insurmountable goal involvement cap of 44, which was first set by Matthew Le Tissier in 1994, then Alan Shearer in 1995, Thierry Henry twice in 2003 and 2004, and Robin van Persie in 2011.

Then came Harry Kane with a bang (46 goal involvements) in 2017. Can Palmer break that record with two games in hand? Probably not, but it’s worth a try.

Most goals

With 39 goals in a calendar year, Kane also owns the distinction for most goals in a year thanks to his incredible 2017 performance.

Beginning with two goals against Watford on New Year’s Day, that total was achieved in just 36 Premier League games. In a 4-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion, he quickly followed it up with a hat-trick, one of four hat-tricks Kane scored between January and the conclusion of the 2016–17 campaign.

In his penultimate game of 2017, Kane equalled Shearer’s 1995 mark of 36 goals in 42 appearances with another triple at Burnley. Three days later, he netted another hat-trick against Southampton to secure the top position.

Erling Haaland of Manchester City appeared to have the potential to surpass that benchmark this year for a time.

Haaland failed to even participate in his first Premier League game of 2024 until January 31 due to injury, and he didn’t score his first goals until he scored two in a 2-0 victory over Everton at home on February 10. Actually, he had only scored four goals in nine matches going into April.

Although the Norwegian has the potential for amazing feats, it would be a lot to expect him to score 14 goals in his final two games for 2024.

Most assists

With 13 assists in 2024, Palmer also shares the lead.

As Mikel Arteta’s team has been scoring goals from set pieces lately, it should come as no surprise that Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka joins him on that total. Saka’s lethal corner kicks frequently end up in the head of a teammate.

The previous record for the most Premier League assists in a calendar year, held by a former Arsenal player, is seven ahead of both.

Despite occasionally dividing opinions, Mesut Ozil was virtually unstoppable in 2015 when it came to setting up teammates for goals. In 34 games, the Germany international recorded 20 assists, surpassing Gunners great Henry’s 2003 total of 19.

Most clean sheets

With one game left until the year ends, David Raya of Arsenal has 17 clean sheets, meaning that this record won’t be surpassed in 2024.

In the Premier League, four goalkeepers have recorded at least 20 clean sheets in a single calendar year. Tim Flowers of Blackburn Rovers became the first to do so in 1994 (20 in 41 games), while Peter Schmeichel of Manchester United was the second in 1996 (20 in 36 games).

In 2005, Petr Cech of Chelsea set a new benchmark by keeping 21 clean sheets in just 33 games while giving up just 14 goals.

Before Ederson of Man City recorded 23 clean sheets in 41 games in 2021, that record stood for 16 years.

Most yellow cards

Marcos Senesi will be pleased to learn that in 2024 he is going to fail to match this record. Despite having 12 bookings this season, the AFC Bournemouth defender is still five bookings short of the record, which was achieved just a year ago.

Prior to joining Bayern Munich last summer, Joao Palhinha was a vital member of Fulham. However, in 2023, he received an astounding 17 yellow cards in just 36 appearances, or nearly one every other game.

Most red cards

Premier League players were each sent off three times in one calendar year.

Vinnie Jones (1995), Dion Dublin (1997), Franck Queudrue (2002), Cattermole (2010), and—perhaps surprisingly—Son Heung-min (2019) are on the list of three red cards.

In 2024, Jack Stephens and Kalvin Phillips are the two players who received red cards twice in England’s premier division. It will be intriguing to observe whether either player will surpass or tie this record.

Most cards to teams

Chelsea may be dominating the Premier League standings, but they are also accruing cards at a pace that might make one believe Christmas is almost here.

Chelsea’s 112 (108 yellow, four red) cards in 2023 surpassed the record for the greatest number of cards in a calendar year, and they now have 97 (95 yellow, two red) with two games left in 2024. With 90 cards (88 yellow, 2 red), Wolverhampton Wanderers are not far behind either.

The Premier League’s card allocation continues to shift, as evidenced by the four occasions the most cards were received in a calendar year, all of which occurred in 2023. Chelsea were followed closely by Spurs, Wolves (all 106), and Aston Villa (99).

Most defeats

In stints with Southampton and Sheffield United this season, Cameron Archer has suffered a loss in 22 of his 29 games; with two more games left for the struggling Saints, he might reach 24.

That would barely miss the previous mark set by Geraint Williams of Ipswich (25 defeats in 40 games) in 1994 and Neil Maddison, a former Southampton midfielder, who lost 25 of his 43 Premier League games in 1993.

Aaron Ramsdale, the current goalkeeper for the Saints, also has 25 losses from just 33 games during stints with Sheffield United and Bournemouth in 2020.

Most goals in the 90th minute

Late goals are more common than ever because games are often lengthier. With three matchdays remaining (at the time of observation), 2024 has already surpassed the Premier League’s record of 97 goals in the 90th minute, which was set last year. In addition to beating it, we might achieve three figures for the first time.

With eight goals in the 90th minute or later in 2024, Bournemouth have the potential to score even more. Three more goals would tie the records of Arsenal and Chelsea (11 apiece in 2010). On the other hand, Manchester United must prevent three more goals in the 90th minute to avoid matching Spurs’ 2023 record of conceding 12 goals.
