The Italian has backed Mbappe to take spot-kicks in the long run despite recent missed chances.

Kylian Mbappe’s consecutive penalty misses have created doubt on the Real Madrid forward’s ability to take spot-kicks, recent reports have suggested these crucial missed opportunities could lower his chances of getting a chance in the future.

The 25-year-old botched his second spot kick against Athletic Bilbao after having missed one against Liverpool in a 2-0 in the Champions League.

While Mbappe did manage to score a goal against Getafe, the forward didn’t take the penalty in that match as Jude Bellingham stepped up to take responsibility.

However, the former Paris Saint-Germain player had a chance to continue his goalscoring streak when he was given the chance to find the back of the net from 12 yards out but once again Mbappe missed his chance as Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao.

Nonetheless, his miss against Bilbao won’t have any implications on taking the spot-kicks as manager Carlo Ancelotti has backed Mbappe to remain one of the penalty-takers at the club, as he said:

“Vinicius has usually taken a lot of penalties and all of them are good. The ones who take penalties are three: Mbappe, Bellingham and Vinicius.”

Mbappe’s penalty miss has resulted in a serious debate as to why the player has failed to put the ball. Real Madrid also had an opportunity to remain within touching distance of league leaders Barcelona with a game in hand had they won but are now four points adrift of them.

Meanwhile, Mbappe will continue to face criticism for his lack of impact in the games. Following the injury to Vinicius Junior, Mbappe had a chance to influence the game from the left flank but so far he has been disappointing.

Once the Brazilian returns, Mbappe will once again have to operate as a striker and it will be challenging for him to play as a centre-forward given he has seldom played as a number nine throughout his career.
