Club Leon had to vacate their spot in group D.

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 edition is all set to be in action from June 14. The mega competition will take place in the USA. All 32 teams are ready to compete for the big title and the prize pool.

The English Premier League side Manchester City are the defending champions as they defeated Fluminense during the 2023 edition to clinch the trophy. Real Madrid are the record winners of the Club World Cup, winning the competition five times in history.

The 2025 edition of the FIFA CWC will consist of 32 teams for the first time and now the competition will take place in every four years. A team was disqualified which vacated a spot in Group D. To determine the worthy competitor, a qualifying play-in fixture took place between the other two teams.

Which team took up the final Club World Cup spot?

Liga MX side Club Leon were a part of Group D. But they were disqualified from the tournament due to FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules. Pachuca and Club Leon, both are owned by Grupo Pachuca. There cannot be multiple teams under the same ownership participating in the tournament, as it breaches the FIFA CWC integrity rules.

The Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC (LAFC), have clinched the vacant FIFA Club World Cup spot after defeating Club America in the qualifying play in fixture. The Black and Gold have now become the third MLS team to join the FIFA CWC 2025.

LAFC will now compete in Group D alongside, Chelsea, Flamengo and ES Tunis. The Black and Gold will compete against Enzo Maresca-led Chelsea in their first match of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
