Who will replace Edu at Arsenal?
The Gunners are set to look for a replacement for Edu.
After a challenging beginning as manager, Mikel Arteta has given Arsenal incredible stability in recent years. However, the Spaniard & others in the backroom have suffered a significant blow with the departure of important club official Edu.
The sporting director was instrumental in the Gunners’ comeback to the top of the Premier League standings. Rumours of his departure circulated on Monday before the north London powerhouses officially announced the Brazilian’s resignation, which the former midfielder called “an incredibly hard decision to make.”
Arsenal have to post a job opening on LinkedIn and begin the process of selecting a new sporting director. Meanwhile, Edu appears to be moving in some capacity to a group of clubs owned by Evangelos Marinakis. Which options are available, then for the Gunners?
Who will replace Edu at Arsenal?
A possible appointment is constantly hampered by Paul Mitchell’s ties to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 43-year-old spent periods at RB Leipzig and AS Monaco after working well with Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and Spurs. Since he was appointed sporting director of Newcastle earlier this year, it might be too challenging to get him to leave St. James’ Park so quickly.
He does, however, have an eye for talent that Arsenal could exploit, having recognized players like Christopher Nkunku, Sadio Mane, and Son Heung-min.
Only a year after taking Michael Edwards’ place as sporting director, Julian Ward resigned from his position, but he has since rejoined Liverpool as technical director for FSG.
However, if Ward was interested in trying his luck at his previous job somewhere else, the bright lights of another Premier League powerhouse may be alluring.
Monchi, who made a name for himself in Spain with Sevilla, has been instrumental in Unai Emery’s transformation of Aston Villa.
The 56-year-old, who is currently Villa’s club’s head of football operations, helped Sevilla discover a vast talent pool, and under his leadership, players like Jose Antonio Reyes, Jesus Navas, and Sergio Ramos all rose through the ranks.
Losing important people is nothing new for Manchester City. Hell, prior to joining Arsenal, Arteta served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant manager.
Txiki Begiristain has announced his intention to leave his position as director of football at the end of the current campaign, and Omar Berrada joined Manchester United.
Guardiola and Begiristain have a long-standing partnership, so it doesn’t seem plausible that he would jeopardize it by joining Arsenal. In the Premier League, however, weirder things have occurred.
