Argentina have been undefeated so far in the competition.

Defending champions Argentina secured their place in the Copa America 2024 semifinals after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win (4-2) against a resolute Ecuador, continuing their perfect run in the tournament.

Defender Lisandro Martínez gave Argentina a 1-0 lead with his first-half goal, but Ecuador clawed back into the match when super sub Kevin Rodríguez scored a late equalizer during injury time, leveling the game at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

With the game proceeding directly to a penalty shootout under Copa America guidelines, La Albiceleste had the worst possible start as captain Lionel Messi missed his penalty. However, Argentina’s 2022 World Cup hero Emiliano Martínez delivered once again with two consecutive penalty saves, allowing Lionel Scaloni’s side to survive a major scare and progress to the next round.

Argentina finished the group stage as Group A table toppers with an impeccable record of three wins, three clean sheets, and five goals scored.

La Albiceleste kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 win against newcomers Canada, courtesy of second-half goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. They followed with two more wins, as a Messi-less Argentina wrapped up the group stages with 1-0 and 2-0 victories over Chile and Peru, respectively.

Despite limited playing time, Inter Milan star Lautaro Martínez is the current top scorer in the 2024 Copa America with an impressive four goals.

Overall, Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina has demonstrated a robust defensive setup, conceding just a single goal; a dynamic midfield managing intense workloads at both ends of the pitch; and a lethal attacking force delivering match-winning goals.

The 2022 World Cup winners will face Canada at MetLife Stadium in the semifinals. Regardless of their potential opponent, La Albiceleste are firm favorites to reach another Copa America final.

Tournament debutants Canada defied expectations by advancing from the group stages, finishing second in Group A after collecting four points. They defeated Peru 1-0 and held Chile to a goalless draw to qualify for the quarterfinals but their most impressive performance came in Quarterfinals where they defeated Venezuela 4-3 in penalty shootout.
