Why Inter Milan's Mehdi Taremi is absent from FIFA Club World Cup 2025?

He was named in Nerazzurri’s 32-man squad for the mega competition.
Inter Milan have not been able to perform at their very best in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as of now. In their opening match of the mega competition, they were held to a draw by Liga MX club Monterrey.
In their second group stage match, they faced Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds. Internazionale Milano faced difficulties, but with a last-minute match-winning goal, they were able to secure three points this time around. The Nerazzurri failed to win any trophies during their 2024-25 campaign, which led to Simone Inzaghi parting ways with the club.
The Italian giants appointed Cristian Chivu as their new manager after Inter Milan’s 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League final. Despite their best efforts, they had also failed to win the Serie A title. It will be interesting to see Inter’s mindset going further.
Inter Milan’s Mehdi Taremi was not spotted with his squad during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 despite being named in the 32-man squad for the mega event.
Why did Inter’s Mehdi Taremi miss out?
Mehdi Taremi joined Inter Milan during the 2024 summer transfer window on a three-year deal from Liga Portugal side FC Porto. Since his joining, the Iranian forward has made 43 appearances for the Serie A giants.
Even though he was named in the 32-man Inter squad for the Club World Cup, Mehdi Taremi did not make it to the United States of America, where the current edition of the FIFA CWC is taking place.
The main reason for Taremi’s absence is because of the geopolitical complications between Israel and Iran. After the conflict, the Iranian airspace saw a shutdown, and all of the commercial flights in and out of the country were suspended.
Inter Milan’s officials were in contact with the Iranian authorities even before the Club World Cup began. But the situation between Israel and Iran heated up, which led to the Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport being shut down.
There are further complications in the travel of Taremi as the United States has made its protocols more strict for Iranian nationals. Mehdi Taremi is a big miss for Internazionale on the world stage and will have to wait before being in action for the Italian giants once again.
