Why Liverpool are not in FIFA Club World Cup 2025? (Explained)

The Reds recently won the Premier League.
Although the excitement surrounding the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is growing, Liverpool will not be competing in the redesigned international competition alongside Manchester City and Chelsea.
FIFA revived the Club World Cup, which the United States is scheduled to host for the first time in the summer of 2025. Eight groups of four sides each will fight to advance to the four-round knockout bracket in the 32-team formatβs expansion.
The Reds will only be watching as teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and others compete in the highly lucrative event.
Why Liverpool are not in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025?
Due to FIFAβs two-team-per-nation regulation, Liverpool could not be included as the third team representing England in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cupβs expanded 32-team edition.
European teams qualify depending on their results in the UEFA Champions League over the predefined four-year cycle beginning in 2020β2021. Chelsea and Manchester City qualified based on their respective Champions League victories in 2020β21 and 2022β23.
If Liverpool had defeated Real Madrid in the 2022 Champions League final, it would have presented a different tale because the Reds are ranked as superior by UEFA than Chelsea. As Real Madrid claimed two UEFA Champions League titles over a four-season span, Atletico Madrid did benefit from the UEFA ranking.
However, Liverpoolβs next chance to participate in the Club World Cup will be in 2029. Arne Slotβs team will travel to Asia for their preseason tour when they have the entire summer to themselves.
They recently won the league and will look to reinforce the squad for the upcoming season under the Dutch manager and fight for all the trophies possible.
Liverpool were one of the best teams in Europe this season before they suffered elimination in the Champions League and domestic cups. But they will still end the season with a title.
