Heavy snowfall in parts of the UK is turning out to be a major roadblock.

Early Sunday morning saw snow cover areas throughout the United Kingdom, and the weather will affect many sporting events.

The snow has affected travel nationwide with runways closed at Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon, and Birmingham Airports. The Met Office issued a severe weather warning after 25 cm of snow fell in certain places, affecting the UK’s roadways and train system as well.

For individuals who want to play in grassroots contests or attend sporting events, it is a horrible scenario. Pitch inspections are happening this morning before officials make a decision, which could result in late postponement for travelling fans.

Without a doubt, the day’s most important matchup is at Anfield, where Liverpool hope to meet Manchester United in a Premier League matchup. The Safety Advisory Group of Liverpool City Council has not yet convened to decide whether or not the game may proceed, therefore it is currently in doubt.

Thousands of supporters travelling are from Manchester for the game. Liverpool was blanketed in snow overnight. Even if the field is suitable for play, treacherous roads may signal a need for postponement for safety reasons.

Postponements have already occurred in other parts of the nation. The most well-known to date is Chesterfield’s League Two match versus Gillingham. Chesterfield stated that “the match referee conducted an early inspection and decided the game could not go ahead as planned,” citing “adverse weather conditions.”

The track failed the first assessment of the day at 7:30 am, putting Sunday’s horse racing at Chepstow in jeopardy as well. To ascertain whether racing may go, another check is scheduled for later.

Liverpool statement: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield. At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can.”
