The Allianz Arena will host another major game tonight when Germany take on Portugal in the first of two UEFA Nations League semi-finals, just days after staging the biggest fixture in European club football.

Following a poor Euro last summer and an inconclusive victory over Denmark in the Nations League quarterfinals, coach Roberto Martinez is beginning to feel the strain.

Although the 2019 winners are the underdogs in the final four, a large portion of their current roster was on the winning squad six years ago. A win here would put them in a strong position going into World Cup qualification, which Martinez’s team will begin in September. There, they will face Ireland, Hungary, and Armenia.

After their lacklustre displays at Euro 2024, such as losing to Georgia and needing penalties to defeat Slovenia before losing to France, it was crucial that Portugal did well in the Nations League groups.

Martinez saw a response from his players, as they went undefeated in their group, which included Croatia, Scotland, and Poland.

Will Ronaldo play tonight?

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to get his 220th Portugal cap today, against a country he has never won against, amid rumours that he is leaving Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo trained extensively with his teammates prior to the game and is anticipated to be included in Portugal’s starting eleven after concluding a difficult 2024–25 season with Al Nassr, in which he was unable to win any titles.

However, Ronaldo scored 35 goals in 41 club games during an outstanding individual campaign. Long into his career, Ronaldo is surprising everyone by putting on incredible performances.

Even though he is 40 years old, his call-up to the national squad shows how much the manager and staff trust him with his performance. Ronaldo will be hoping to guide his team to victory so they can guarantee a spot in the competition’s final.
