England are top of group of Group C.

After a cagey 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second game of the Euro 2024 campaign, Group C table-toppers England face a tricky Slovenia in their final group stage game.

The Three Lions were lackluster in their crucial match against Denmark, where a win would have qualified them for the knockout rounds of the competition. England captain Harry Kane broke the deadlock in the 18th minute to score his first goal of the tournament. However, Denmark soon equalized through midfielder Morten Hjulmand’s fantastic long-range effort.

England’s overall team play was slow and sluggish, with Denmark being the better side for the majority of the match. Gareth Southgate and his men were heavily criticized for their underwhelming performance, as they are one of the favorites to win the competition this summer.

Even in their hard-fought opening-game narrow win against Serbia, England dropped off massively after scoring the opener, allowing Serbia to grow into the game and be a serious threat on attack. Despite being favourites in most games, Southgate’s pragmatic approach to matches has been called out by English fans on multiple occasions as it has hindered this star-studded squad from fulfilling their potential as a top team.

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, too, came under the microscope for his poor performance in that game. Just like most of his teammates, the 20-year-old midfielder looked a frustrating figure in the middle of the park as his misplaced passes, mistimed tackles, and getting caught out in possession became recurring themes throughout the match.

Jude Bellingham is expected to start against Slovenia

Despite a poor performance against Denmark, Jude Bellingham is still a key player for the Three Lions and is expected to start against Slovenia to seal the top spot in Group C.

The 2024 UEFA Champions League-winning midfielder already proved his worth in this tournament when he scored the only goal against Serbia in a closely contested game to help England get off to a winning start with all three points. However, he could potentially be employed in a different role against Slovenia.

Due to the failure of the Trent Alexander Arnold experiment in midfield, Bellingham could lineup in a much deeper role this time next to Declan Rice.

In the opening two games, Bellingham was used as an attacking midfielder just behind Kane, but that position could now be occupied by Phil Foden, with the introduction of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon on the left flank, to create a much more balanced team.

With just a point needed for qualification, England will look to put in a dominating display against unbeaten Slovenia to end the group stage phase on a high and carry that momentum for the pivotal knockout rounds of Euro 2024.
