Women's Olympic Football: List of all winners
USA are the record medal winners in women’s Olympic football history.
Men’s football in the Olympics has been a part of every quadrennial competition so far, barring two occasions during the 1896 Athens Games and 1932 Los Angeles Games. On the other hand, the women’s competition in the sport was introduced much later in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
In the Paris Olympics 2024, the eighth edition of the women’s football tournament will be held in France from July 25 to August 10. In this event, a total of 12 countries will battle it out for Olympic glory, with the matches set to take place in seven cities across the nation.
For the first stage, the participating countries are divided into three groups from A to C with four teams each. Following the group phase, a total of eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.
The 12 participating nations are – France, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, Zambia, Germany, Australia, Spain, Japan, Nigeria and Brazil. The opening games of the tournament are – Spain vs. Japan (Group C) & Canada vs. New Zealand (Group A).
Canada are currently the reigning gold medallist. For their title defence campaign, they have been placed in Group A of the tournament alongside the likes of hosts France, Colombia and New Zealand.
The inaugural gold medallists of women’s football in the Olympics were the United States of America during the 1996 Atlanta Games. During this competition, China claimed the silver medal, whereas Norway had to settle for the bronze medal.
The USA are also the record medal winners in the tournament’s history, having clinched a total of six medals (Gold: Four, Silver: One, Bronze: One). They have failed to win a medal only once in seven editions so far, which happened for the first time at the Rio Games in 2016. Having won four of the first five editions of the tournament, the United States are once again favourites to win a medal in the Paris Olympics 2024.
