The Danish striker wore No.11 last season for the Red Devils.
Manchester United have confirmed that striker Rasmus Hojlund will inherit the No.9 shirt starting from the upcoming 2023-24 season. The Dane striker played with the No.11 jersey during his first season at Old Trafford, but now that Anthony Martial has left, he will wear the No.9 jersey.
Hojlund follows in the footsteps of some legendary United players by donning the same number when playing for his country. Some of the club’s former No.9s from the Premier League era include Andy Cole, Dimitar Berbatov, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, and Louis Saha.
After playing in Euro 2024, Hojlund, who netted 16 goals in an uneventful debut season with United, resumed training earlier this week. The former Atalanta player returned to Carrington on Monday following a three-week holiday, having started all four of Denmark’s games in Germany.
In addition, he has been included in the team’s travelling roster to America on Wednesday. He will make could be on the pitch on Sunday when United plays Arsenal in Los Angeles, donning the No. 9 shirt. On the club’s website, a happy Hojlund was seen carrying his new number.
His choice of number nine might potentially be interpreted as an endorsement after Joshua Zirkzee’s arrival from Bologna.
Due to Martial’s injury in the later parts of the previous season, there was a lack of contention for the starting spot up top. The Dutchman will fill that void and also act as backup at times throughout the season.
Zirkzee is expected to play in wide areas or as a central striker this season. Ivan Toney’s constant situation at Brentford is also being watched by United, while young player Ethan Wheatley is a further choice.
Hojlund looks good in the number nine shirt and he’ll be joining some of the greatest strikers the team has ever had.
