Formula 1: What is F1 2023 summer break and when does it end?
After a staggering 12 races in just 21 weeks, the F1 paddock is now heading into a well-deserved summer break during August following the Belgian Grand Prix. However, for new fans of the sport, the summer break might be confusing since F1 regularly has long breaks between races. Now, in this article, we’ll explore how the summer break works.
Significance of the F1 2023 Summer Break
Although it may seem like the summer break is just a rest period between two races, it holds significant importance as it is officially incorporated into the sporting regulations, with consequences for teams that fail to adhere to the stipulated rules. It starts with the last race in July, i.e., Belgium, until the commencement of the first race in late August or early September.
The 14-day shutdown period, outlined in Article 21.8 of the FIA F1 sporting regulations, imposes restrictions on various activities, including a prohibition on further designing the car, developing the car, and even parts production and planning. However, it is important to note that essential service and maintenance are still permitted to ensure the basic functions of the team continue.
Furthermore, departments that do not cover areas directly involved in car performance and functioning, like marketing, finance, and legal, are allowed to continue their activities. Additionally, it also serves as a cost-containment measure, compelling teams to temporarily halt their development and research work.
Impact on drivers
First introduced when the F1 calendar started packing 20 races per year, the summer break’s importance for F1 drivers cannot be overstated. This is because, following the debriefing sessions with the team and the media or marketing obligations after the last race, drivers are free to enjoy their holidays and can finally take some time off for their friends and family.
When will Formula 1 be back?
The much-awaited 2023 F1 season will recommence after the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from the 25th to the 27th of August. This event would also mark the beginning of the final ten races, scheduled over 14 weeks, culminating in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from 24th to 26th November.
