F1 Rumors: Sergio Perez could announce retirement at Mexican GP
Red Bull's Sergio Perez hasn't had the best season so far, considering he was in championship contention for the first few races, but has since slipped over 200 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen. Now, in a recent development, reports of Sergio Perez contemplating retirement from Formula 1 have surfaced from a source linked to Escudería Telmex.
According to the rumours, Red Bull has conveyed to Perez that his contract won’t extend beyond 2023, leaving little to no option for Perez’s continuation in F1 despite the potential appeal of his sponsorship package. The discussions about Perez’s retirement reportedly took place at a casual dinner, where the driver cited his lengthy career and growing family as factors contributing to this decision.
Moreover, Red Bull’s decision not to retain Perez beyond 2023 has prompted discussions about a graceful exit where he would announce his retirement at the upcoming Mexican GP. However, it is important to approach this information with caution, considering the anonymous nature of the source and the absence of concrete proof.
Sergio Perez's response
In response to the report, a source close to Perez dismissed the rumours as “a load of nonsense.” This is because it contradicts Perez’s statement from six weeks ago, where he expressed his intention to race at least until 2026 before considering the future.
Moreover, team principal Christian Horner also acknowledged Perez’s current struggles, expressing optimism about the Mexican driver regaining form in the remaining races of 2023. Furthermore, Perez also outlined clear objectives for the next two seasons, aiming for a second-place finish this year and aspiring to contend for the championship in 2024.
