F1: FIA confirms Abu Dhabi GP not at risk amid cancellation speculation

The Abu Dhabi GP has long been a pivotal race on the F1 calendar, marked by historic moments, such as the intense title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021. However, earlier this week, there were rumours surrounding the cancellation of the Abu Dhabi GP amidst the tensions in the Middle East. Now, the FIA has dismissed these speculations, confirming that the event will proceed as planned.

What happened?

As per the reports, the rumours first began in Austin, where motorsportmagazine indicated that the FIA was considering cancelling the race due to the potential Israeli invasion of Gaza. This invasion, if it occurred, was feared to have broader implications across the Middle East, potentially involving neighbouring countries like Lebanon and Iran, consequently disrupting regional peace.

Moreover, there were also concerns about the US, which is currently reinforcing its air defence around military installations, including the Al-Dhafra air base, situated a mere 30 miles from the Yas Marina Circuit.

FIA’s response

Despite the geopolitical tensions, the FIA has now clearly stated that the Abu Dhabi GP is not under imminent threat of cancellation. However, it is important to note that authoritative bodies, such as the UK’s Foreign Office, have highlighted an elevated threat of terrorism in the United Arab Emirates.

“The race will go ahead one hundred per cent for sure. There will be no change in that. We are currently still selling tickets through our website,” said a spokesperson.
