What’s next for Romero Games?
Doom legend John Romero’s Romero Games is now pivoting to a new game in development, which was recently reported by Insider Gaming.
Xbox axed its publishing deal amid July’s mass layoffs, which led to a cancelled project, Hellslayer. This was already in development for a decade. Let’s check out more details in this article.
Hellslayer: The Priest-Demon Slayer that never was
Xbox canceled funds for summer 2025; there were some rumors about the studio being shut down, but it was later denied. Romero and his studio were working on the project, Hellslayer.
This game starred a bada** priest who battles against demons in a gritty FPS style action shooter, a homage to Hotline Miami. Die, instant restart, brutal rhythm.
They spent nearly a decade developing this game, but due to cancelled funding, they had to scrapped the project.
The good thing is that Romero Games survived, announcing a new FPS at December’s panel. Not from scratch: “A different game” with core vibes. Romero says fans of old Id Software (Doom, Quake) will enjoy it—something “I’ve never played before.”

Conclusion
Now, Insider Gaming has learned more juicy details about the new game, which is in development. But for now, they have not revealed any information as they are protecting the source.
According to Romero, this new game will be something that you have never played before, but if you are a fan of old ID Software titles, you will like many features of the new title. The game will be revealed in front of the whole world when it’s ready.
