MMO with Telltale story twist!

New leaked screenshots have resurfaced online that offer fans a closer look at the cancelled Lord of the Rings game. This project was reportedly developed by Eidos Montreal, a studio behind the Tomb Raider games.

This was made in collaboration between Amazon Games and Embracer Group before it was scrapped. It happened during widespread layoffs at Amazon in 2025, which heavily impacted the gaming division.

Several projects were shut down, including this one. Although this game won’t release, the latest leaked images have shown how good this Tolkien universe could have been. Let’s check out more details in this article.

A different take on The Lord of the Rings game

According to MP1ST, this cancelled project was designed as an MMO featuring an overhead perspective (Baldur’s Gate 3 type), which generally sets it apart from traditional action-focused LOTR games.

One of the most exciting aspects was the combination of gameplay technologies, such as card-based mechanisms with a narrative approach reminiscent of Telltale-style storytelling.

This combination means players must focus more strongly on the player choices and story-driven progression rather than just spamming buttons.

Although it is unknown how the card mechanics would have worked, the concept suggested a hybrid experience that included strategy, storytelling, and multiplayer features.

The leaked screenshots of the game also look amazing and this would have been an instant hit among the MMO titles due to the LOTR fanbase and a unique approach to stand out from other MMO titles in the market.

Umbar as the main location

This cancelled Lord of the Rings game was set in Umbar, a port city on the southern coast of Gondor, mentioned in Tolkien’s lore.

The leaked images show that developers have created multiple versions of the city, Umbar before and after destruction, which also reflects its history in the books.

According to the screenshots, the project had huge world-building goals before being halted due to development issues and corporate changes.

Conclusion

It is disappointing that this MMO Lord of the Rings game won’t come to life due to cancellation. However, you don’t have to be that disappointed, as there is already a new game under development which is said to rival Hogwarts Legacy.

This means that it will be a large open-world action fantasy RPG game, which is funded by Saudi Investment company.
