No need for hackers!
The live service shooter heavily relies on fair competition and stable servers. Bungie is taking a firm stance ahead of the launch of the extraction shooter Marathon.
The studio has confirmed that anyone caught cheating in the game will be banned forever without giving any second chances. Let’s check out more details in this article.
Fully authoritative servers and improved networking
This is what Bungie has to say about the hacking:
“Anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances.”
The company has also stated that appeals process will exist in case of detection errors. Beyond bans, the studio is also focusing heaviny in server infrastructure.
Their new extraction shooter game will run on “fully authoritative” dedicated servers for both looting and combat. This implies that events such as guns being fired and loot interactions will be authenticated by the server instead of the system of the player, which will result in a weakening of exploits.
There is also a new networking system, which is designed to keep gameplay responsive even under the heavy challenging conditions like high packet loss.
It goes without saying that every bullet fired will be carefully tracked server-side. This aims to deliver competitive integrity without sacrificing smooth performance.
Marathon will also use the Fog of War system to combat against wall hacks and loot-revealing cheats. This limits player visibility and access to sensitive data.

Rebuilt Security Stack, BattlEye Integration & more
Bungie has also revealed that they have built a security framework from the ground up for this game. They will also use BattlEye software to detect malicious activity in addition to a custom anti-cheat system.
For now, security is described as an ongoing process. They will monitor the live gameplay and regularly update their network technologies and anti-cheat measures after the game’s launch.
Gamers and players who disconnect in the middle will have the option to reconnect. In case of failure on reconnection because of a problem on the server side, it is guaranteed by Bungie that the players will be refunded their initial equipment, which is a feature aimed at stopping the possibility of losing in an unfair manner.
All these features and players can test the Marathon during the server slam test, which is starting from February 26, 2026 to March 2, 2026. The game will officially launch on March 5, 2026.
