Code in a box will replace physical game discs!

After facing a lot of criticism and backlash, Sony PlayStation has finally responded and revealed its plans to replace physical game discs once it phases out first-party disc releases in 2028.

Instead of traditional Blu-ray discs, the future PlayStation game disc will include a one-time redeemable digital code. This will allow players to keep the physical case while downloading the game digitally.

Sony PlayStation disc strategy

During the company’s FY2026 Q1 investor Q&A session, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed fans’ concerns regarding the physical game disc.

According to Lin, Sony has no plan to stop selling the boxed versions of the game. But from January 2028, they won’t contain any physical game disc.

Instead, the company will replace the physical disc with a digital redemption code packaged for the retail cases. This system is already common in North America.

Sony will keep discussing this with regional retailers to decide how it can be extended to other regions.

The strategy is similar to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, which has been said to move away from paper-based physical packaging towards code-based.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that there is a very heavy criticism and backlash that Sony PlayStation is currently facing on the internet. Despite all of that, Sony has no plans to back out from their future plans.

They have been very profitable digitally and the backlash has not impacted their sales or performance in any way for now.

According to Lin Tao, Sony believes that its exclusive games, curated ecosystem, and affordable hardware compared to high-end PC will continue to attract fans and gamers.

Why is Sony replacing physical discs?

Sony is transitioning toward a digital-first distribution model and will stop releasing first-party physical discs starting in 2028.

What is a ‘code in a box’?

Instead of a Blu-ray disc, the retail box contains a one-time redeemable code that lets players download the game digitally from the Sony PlayStation Store.

Will Sony PlayStation still sell physical game boxes?

Yes. Sony has confirmed that boxed editions will continue to be sold, but they will include digital codes instead of physical discs.
