The first edition of Masters got $1,500 as the winner’s prize
The 1934 Masters Tournament, held from March 22 to 25 in Augusta, Georgia, USA, marked the inaugural event. Initially known as the “Augusta National Invitational” during its first five years (1934-1938), the tournament featured 72 participants. Horton Smith emerged victorious, defeating Craig Wood with a 20-foot (6 m) birdie putt on the 17th hole to finish at 284 (−4).
As this was the first edition of the Masters, Horton Smith also set the record for winning the tournament on his debut, a feat matched by only two other players.
The Masters was co-founded by amateur golf player Bobby Jones, who also participated and hosted the event. The tournament is notable for several reasons, including Jones’s return to golf after retirement. The course, which opened for play in 1932, was conceived by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts and designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie
It has since become the permanent venue for one of the four major championships in men’s professional golf. In 2009, Golf Digest ranked it as the number one course in its list of America’s top 100 golf courses.
How much amount does the winner get in the 1934 Masters?
The total winning purse was $5,000 and the winner’s portion of share was $1,500. Horton Smith got a decent number that time in 1934. Only 13 players were awarded with payouts and the rest didn’t earn anything.
