Michael Thomas “Fluff” Cowan, born on February 7, 1948, has left an indelible mark on the world of golf with his remarkable career as a caddie. His journey in the sport began with humble origins, learning the intricacies of golf from his father during his upbringing in Winslow, Maine. After a brief stint playing golf during his college years at William Penn University, Cowan transitioned to caddying, a decision that would shape his illustrious career.

Cowan’s caddying journey commenced in 1976, when he accompanied David Smith at the Monday qualifier of the Greater Hartford Open. Since then, he has traversed the fairways alongside some of golf’s most prominent players, including Peter Jacobsen, Tiger Woods, and Jim Furyk, among others. Notably, Cowan’s partnership with Jim Furyk stands as one of the most enduring and successful caddie-player collaborations in golf history, spanning over 24 years of shared victories and memorable moments on the PGA Tour.

Throughout his remarkable career, Cowan has been a witness to golfing milestones and triumphs, contributing his expertise to the success of players on numerous occasions. His tenure with Tiger Woods during the golfer’s initial professional years saw remarkable achievements, including Woods’ ascent to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings and victory at the prestigious Masters Tournament in 1997.

Cowan’s dedication and contribution to the sport were further recognized when he was inducted into the Caddies ‘Hall of Fame’ in 1999, a testament to his enduring legacy and impact on the game. His presence at the WM Phoenix Open alongside C.T. Pan serves as a reminder of his enduring passion for the sport and his unwavering commitment to supporting players in their pursuit of excellence on the golf course.
