Day 2 of the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 ended with European dominance as the defending champions Belgium started their campaign on a high with a 5-0 trouncing of Korea. Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand also trumped their rivals Malaysia, Japan and Chile respectively.
On Day 3 of the 15th iteration of the event, India will face England to put one foot in the knockout round. India defeated Spain 2-0 in their opening Pool D match on Friday at the newly-built Birsa Munda Stadium.
The Indian team cannot drop the fierceness and form that they showed in their match against Spain as England are also coming into this match after thumping Wales 5-0 in their first game.
Local lad Amit Rohidas scored India’s opener in the first quarter while Hardik Singh netted India’s second goal against the Spanish outfit. The men in Blue are second in the standings behind England on goal difference.
Both Harmanpreet Singh and Rohidas then produced a defensive masterclass that impressed their coach Graham Reid. Reid has said that he expects England to be a tougher challenge for his side after they started their World Cup campaign with a win over Spain on Friday.
"We are up against England next and it will be tougher, they are ranked higher than us. We know how tough England are in the Commonwealth Games," Reid said in the post-match press conference of the first game.
In 2022, the two giants played each other three times, with India winning one game in the FIH Pro League. These three meetings have produced 21 goals combined so, the spectators are in for a genuine goal-fest.
