Top 10 highest goalscorers in Women's Hockey in 2022
Two Indian players feature on the list headed by Augustina Gorzelany.
The 2022 season was one of the most important ones for women’s hockey with two major tournaments held within the gap of one month. Women’s World Cup and Commonwealth Games were held in July and August with the Pro League being held simultaneously. The Netherlands were crowned the champions at the World Cup with Great Britain winning the gold at the Commonwealth games. In this article let us look at the highest goalscorers in Women's Hockey in the 2022 season.
Maria Granatto - 13 goals
Maria Granatto has been an integral part of the Argentinian side for the past seven years with over 100 caps and 60 goals. The forward played an integral role in the women’s pro league where Argentina finished in the top spot in the 2021-2022 season. She was also part of the 2020 Olympics silver medal-winning team.
Frederique Matla - 13 goals
The 26-year-old Dutch International made her debut in 2017 with the most successful year being the 2022 season scoring 13 goals. She started off at the junior level winning the silver medal at the 2016 Junior World Cup and then won two consecutive World Cup gold medals in the 2018 and 2022 editions. Matla was also part of the gold medal-winning 2020 Tokyo Olympics team.
Hanna Martin - 13 goals
Hanna Martin represents Great Britain at the Olympics and England at the World Cups. She has played close to 100 matches across all competitions playing in both the midfield and attacking roles. Hanna has progressed gradually since her junior days playing all the age group competitions and then making it to the senior squad. She was the second top scorer of the English team in the 2022 season.
Yibbi Jansen - 14 goals
The 23-year-old made her debut in 2018 and won her first major trophy in her debut season itself (Champions Trophy). The defender followed in the footsteps of her father becoming one of the lethal drag flicker from the Netherlands and was instrumental in the 2022 season.
Vandana Katariya - 14 goals
Vandana Katariya is the first of the two Indians to feature on the list of highest goalscorers in women's hockey in 2022. She played a crucial role for the Indian team during the Commonwealth Games where India finished third. Vandana made her debut in 2013 and is one of the most capped players from the current Indian team. She has scored close to 90 goals. She will play a vital role in the women’s pro league (2023-24) season with her experience playing the important role and also guiding the other young forwards.
Gurjit Kaur - 15 goals
Gurjit Kaur has been the penalty corner specialist taker for the past few years from India and no one is close to getting to her standards. She played an important role in India’s triumph at the 2022 Nations Cup and thus progressed to the Pro League of the 2023-24 season. She has a separate fanbase as well and a separate group of fans in Spain during the Nations Cup came just to support her.
Vanden Borre - 15 goals
The Belgian International was the top scorer in the 2022 season and it was more than a successful year for the 25-year-old. She has scored close to 30 goals in her entire career but 15 of them were scored in one season showing tremendous progress. She made her debut in 2014 after having represented the U21 team for a few years.
Grace Balsdon - 16 goals
Balsdon the 29-year-old came to prominence when she scored the winning goal to claim the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The defender was an integral part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning team defeating Australia in the finals. She represents both England and Great Britain.
Agustina Gorzelany - 27 goals
Augustina is way above in terms of the number of goals scored in the 2022 season and hence is at the top of the highest goalscorers in women's hockey. The next best in the list has scored 16 goals. The defender was part of the silver medal-winning World Cup team in 2022 losing to the Netherlands in the finals. She first came to prominence at the junior level and slowly made her mark in the senior team.
